Dunlop has revealed details of its new-for-2022 RoadSmart IV, its most versatile sport-touring tyre yet. The RoadSmart IV uses a mix of Dunlop’s innovative technologies to create a multi-talented tyre. Dunlop’s goal is to set new standards in handling, stability, wet grip and mileage across the wide spectrum of motorcycles and rider styles in the sport-touring sector.
The sport-touring sector has become incredibly diverse as motorcycle genres overlap each other. Naked roadsters, crossover designs, road-focused adventure bikes, hyper-nakeds as well as traditional sport-tourers, were all in the design remit for RoadSmart IV.
Dunlop saw this broadening of the segment as an opportunity to create an all-new RoadSmart generation. It had to fit the needs of commuters, long-distance tourers and riders using their bikes for a Sunday morning blast. The design process was shaped by Dunlop’s research. Riders wanted a tyre that could deliver a perfect balance of outstanding dry performance and exceptional wet grip, neutral and stable handling and deliver consistent performance even after several thousand kilometres. From that brief, RoadSmart IV was born.
THE SUN’S RISING ON A NEW ERA IN ADVENTURE TYRES. Dunlop Launches Trailmax Meridian!
“Escape from the ordinary” – extreme performance for powerful adventure bikes
Dramatic tread pattern for outstanding dry, wet and off-road ability
‘Stronger for longer’ – Performance throughout the life of the tyre
Up to 15% mileage gains* proven in testing
Rider demands are changing
With sales of on/off road machines such as the BMW GS, Honda Africa Twin, Suzuki V-Strom and Triumph Tiger growing faster than the overall market, riders are expecting greater versatility from their machines – and tyres.
“Over the last decade we have seen a change in the market. Sports bikes used to be the star of the sales charts, but the main growth area is now adventure bikes. Riders are attracted to the high riding position and long distance touring ability, but still demand the potential for off-road adventure. After researching these rider needs, we set a tough challenge for our research and development team.” stated Luca Davide Andreoni, Marketing Manager, Dunlop Motorcycle Europe.
Enduring grip – wet or dry
The dramatic tread pattern on the Trailmax Meridian not only looks spectacular, but it is purposeful and highly effective. It is designed to efficiently expel water at speed, but still retain a high level of dry grip. The magic continues under the pattern with Dunlop’s MultiTread technology. This includes a Hi-Silica compound that provides outstanding wet grip and makes the tyre more flexible at lower temperatures. This, coupled with a Rayon Ply Casing brings the dual benefit of increased mileage and a much quicker warm-up time benefiting riders who increasingly use adventure bikes all-year round. The rear tyre also features a new centre compound which extends to run under the shoulder compound. This helps promote the overall stiffness of the rear tyre, providing sporty handling and increased traction when power is applied.
Both the front and rear tyres feature a two layer version of this Rayon-Ply Casing which, when combined with Jointless Belt (JLB), provides confidence-inspiring handling. “Many of these adventure bikes have power that is in the hypersport league and riders expect the tyre to hide the bike’s relative bulk so they can enjoy nimble and dynamic handling. Trailmax Meridian’s mix of technologies achieves this.” added Dmitri.

Dunlop has announced they will launch a fourth new tyre in their hypersport portfolio in March 2018. The Dunlop SportSmart TT has been developed to meet the needs of riders with the very latest sports bikes and performance roadsters who want to use the same tyre on track and for road riding.
The name SportSmart TT derives from Dunlop’s road focused SportSmart range and adds the letters TT, which refer to “Track Technology”.
The launch of the SportSmart TT marks Dunlop’s comeback to a segment of the market where they last competed with the renowned Qualifier RR over a decade ago.
The new Dunlop Elite 4 high-mileage motorcycle tyre has made its debut. Using Dunlop’s proprietary MT Multi-Tread technology in the rear Elite 4 tyre, Dunlop claims improved grip in wet and dry conditions, more consistent wear, and a quieter ride.
Available in both bias and radial construction to fit different motorcycles, the Elite 4’s MT technology in the rear tyre uses a tough, long-wearing compound in the center of the tyre for longer tread life, and special lateral compounds along the outside edges of the tread for cornering grip. Unique to Dunlop in the cruiser and touring tire market, Multi-Tread gives riders the best of both worlds: outstanding mileage and handling.
